10280 Study Guides the juveniliaMary Brunton [1778 1818] was a Scottish novelist whose books were quite popular. Austen commented in a letter on her novel Self Control that was published in 1809. This book was published in 1814. Brunton was happily married, and apparently encouraged by her husband to acquire education and to write, yet she could write of women struggling in a man's world. This novel added some Highland scenes, all the rage while Scott's Waverley was popular. Cloth
